“Pirates of the Caribbean Salazar's Revenge”, A previous movie had already unveiled Orlando Bloom's return as Will Turner, now a barnacle covered-mess ever since he took over command of The Flying Dutchman, following his death at the end of the third film, At World's End.
Now, the Japanese trailer for the film has unveiled a surprise appearance from Keira Knightley, returning as Elizabeth Swann, in what's likely (unfortunately) little more than a brief cameo.
Johnny Depp's unstoppable rogue must, this time, face a new foe in the guise of former associate Captain Salazar (played with ghoulish delight by Skyfall's Javier Bardem); whose escape from the clutches of the Devil's Triangle has spurred him on a mission to kill all living pirates, with a particular target on Sparrow's back.
Salazar's Revenge certainly, so far, boasts the usual formula for a Pirates of the Caribbean vehicle: pitting a supernatural crew (Salazar's ghost pirates) against Sparrow and a young, beautiful lass (Kaya Scodelario's astronomer Carina Smyth) and lad (Brenton Thwaites' Royal Navy sailor Henry, son of Elizabeth and Will).
Pirates Of The Caribbean is setting sail for its fifth voyage soon – and with the new issue of Empire also dropping anchor this week, we bring bounty from Davy Jones’ Locker. Specifically, a brand new and exclusive image from the film known as Salazar’s Revenge here in the UK, and Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US. Take a look below, and click to embiggen.
#4 A great release date: May 26, 2017
Here, we see Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp, in possibly his final Pirates adventure) squaring up to old sparring partner Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), both of whom have appeared in every film in the franchise thus far. Speaking to Empire, the cast and crew seemed keen to return to the spirit of 2003’s franchise opener, The Curse Of The Black Pearl. “I like all of the films in the franchise, but the first one is my first love,” says Joachim Rønning, the Norwegian co-director of the new film. “For me, it was important to come back to a character dynamic where it is about relatable, real people — some of the people are real, at least — then Jack Sparrow comes in and crashes the party. It was also very important to bring more comedy back in. I feel like they lost some of the humour. This is Buster Keaton on steroids.
Buster Keaton on steroids sounds like something we would watch. For the full insane story on Salazar’s Revenge, which takes in script delays, mass vomiting, cast injuries and a homicidal monkey, pick up a copy of the new issue of Empire, on sale from Thursday 20 Apri.
The movie has shots of warring ships and instances of classic Jack Sparrow humour, such as the scene where the famed pirate is languishing in prison pant-less. In this film, Johnny Depp's character must find his ship the Black Pearl, his crew and the Trident of Poseidon, which will enable him to control the seas. The film is titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge in India. Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, escapes from the Devil's Triangle with his ghost crew, determined to kill every sea pirate.
Movie has a shot of Keira Knightley too, who makes a return as Elizabeth Swann. She was missing from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the franchise. Orlando Bloom's Will Turner also makes a comeback in the film, and we are introduced to his character's son played by Brenton Thwaites.
While we continue to puzzle over the change in title from the States, where the movie is subtitled, Dead Men Tell No Tales, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge is reminding us all of its UK name with new character posters.
